KANE APPLEGATE
Technician
sculptures become illusions: the object, stripped of ITS function.
Kane Applegate (he/him) graduated in 2018 from Solent Southampton University in Fine Art. Since graduating, Kane has been gathering skills in construction and other trades, whilst maintaining a healthy art practice in Southampton, including the restoring the Alfred Arms pub into artist studios and events spaces. Kane is also a technician for various galleries in Southampton e.g. Old Northam Road Gallery and God’s House Tower.
His practice consists of walking around locations and collecting images and abandoned objects/materials, discarded and disregarded by the citizens of the location. Working with those found things, he builds sculptures and structures that explore the notion of three physical forces: balance, compression and tension. In their final form, his sculptures become illusions; the object, stripped of their function, stack, balance and bend in seemingly impossible ways.
Kane has exhibited widely, including at Aspex Portsmouth (2018), Solent Showcase (2018), Washington State University (2018), Gods House Tower (2019), Ripe Bananas (2018) and Homemade Mango Chutney (2020).
